Counted Cross Stitch

This is what we will be making

Cross stitch Hibiscus

Note: This tutorial can be done in PSP8, PSP9 or PSPX, although the screenshots are from PSP8.

You will need the following items for this tutorial:
Corel Paint Shop Pro, my aida_coarse_ns.bmp in psp format, and a picture tube.

I made the aida_coarse_ns.bmp from a wonderful tutorial by Lily, who has graciously given me permission to share it with you. If you would rather make your own, check out tutorial #3 (which will work in all versions) at Lily's site.

Letīs begin!

1. Create a new image, 425 by 425 pixels, transparent background.

2. Flood fill the image with white.

3. Go to Effects>Distortion Effects>Wave. Use these settings:

4. Go to Effects>3D Effects>Drop Shadow. Use these settings:

Drop Shadow

5. Add a new layer and add the tube you want to use for this image.

6. Add a new layer. Select All>Selections Modify Contract. Contract your selection by 8. Open up the aida_coarse_ns.bmp you downloaded. Set your foreground to Pattern, angle 0, scale 100. Floodfill the selected area. Set your Blend mode to MULTIPLY.

De-Select

7. Add a new layer. Choose your pen tool. Change your foreground color to #606060, and your background to Null. Select the Small Dash line.

Small Dash Line

Your line width should be set to 1.00, Antialias is UNCHECKED. This will keep your "stitches" looking very sharp. Don't forget to recheck Antialias when you're finished.

For PSP8 choose the Line Segments tool, simple mode, for PSP9 and PSPX choose mode, Draw Lines and Polylines. To ensure that you keep your line straight when you drag the pen, left click with your pen tool, hold down your Shift key, and continue your line.

Note: If you don't keep your line straight, you'll end up with a line that's mixed thick and thin.

Now with your Pen tool, draw 4 lines just inside the first set of squares in the Aida fill. Here is a closeup of what you're trying to do:

Stitching

Note: When I finished my lines, I thought they looked a bit too dark, so I lowered the opacity on the layer.

8. Add your signature.....and you're done!

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.

NOTE: Any image you make using this tutorial is completely your own property.
